Summary Vision

“Our Vision of arts & culture for Local Artists and Arts Organizations in Greater Flint is to develop an Art Center concept that provides:

  1. Brings together existing educational, art organizations and artists
  2. Provides education in visual and performing arts.
  3. Provides an art mentor program
  4. Downtown location
  5. Holds performances, exhibits, commissions
  6. Marketing, publicity and other support
  7. Diversity
  8. Festivals and workshops
  9. Educational workshops (teachers)
  10. Substantial funding and self generating income”


Full Vision Exercise Ideas

  1. More Public Art
  2. Art Organizations talking to each other consistently
  3. Cultural Center taken downtown and become part of the downtown experience.
  4. Keep places open once they are there.
  5. More accessible funding for artists and local art organizations
  6. Free Art Center teaching art to middle and high school students fully equipped
  7. Performing arts (dance, theater, music) free for middle school, high school and community at large.
  8. City web-site that would have access to art organizations and local artists (with links to all)
  9. Free Teaching centers located strategically (high schools) which would give access to students (K-12) and adults.
  10. Downtown cultural center for American Music and Dance. (Including guest artists who would conduct workshops)
  11. Art College (like Kendall)
  12. Annual hands-on, family orientated day of discovering arts in downtown
  13. Continue to bring in contemporary art (ideas) to downtown so we can see what is happening in other places.
  14. More galleries devoted to Latino & African Americans, with representation to become professional.
  15. Within the educational community, art products are produced and marketed with profits going back into such an entity.
  16. Coordinated effort of exhibitions and publicity amongst the organizations.
  17. Be like Toronto.
  18. Local arts organizations that promote local artists in all genres towards employment, funding sources, and education components for the greater community.
  19. K-12 Jazz curriculum in all schools in county that would include history & playing of instruments.
  20. Public awareness of opportunities that is available to experience.
  21. Town to look like its brimming with artists – Banners, Music, Festivals
  22. Make art not war.
  23. Continued workshops of arts in the curriculum for teachers led by local artists.
  24. Arts mentors’ program.
  25. Keep what we have.
  26. Ability to sell artwork locally
  27. Graphic map of facilities – Cultural Center Map
  28. Include Churches
